Switch Pitch Converter Stall

Hi,
*
Anyone know the advertised converter stall speeds for various stock switch pitch converters?
*
I'm trying to get an idea of What Stall Speeds would be, using a Stock Switch Pitch '66 TH400 Wildcat Converter, in a 8-71 blown 425 Nailhead Powered, 1800 pound T Bucket. *Lots of Torque in a light car...Could I get it in and out of gear, at idle, in High Stall, without a clunk? *
*
425 Engine, Cam 240/246 .546/.561 114 L/C- solid roller. *8.5:1 Compression. *10 PSI Boost. *Race Gas. 364 Rods with offset ground crank and .060" under bearings. TH 400 Full Manual Valve Body. 3.89 Gear. *33" Tall Tire
*
Jim at PAE Enterprise recommends a PAE 3000 converter. *He said it will Stall "around" 3200 RPM, in High Stall Mode, with this combination.
*
Any input is appreciated.

Are sure you will even need a Higher Stall Converter with your Combination of a Lite Car amp; Big Block with a Blower!!
Doug

Wow, that's a hell of an engine!

The 65-66 Skylark GS used the smaller converter from the 300-340 cars. In my 66, it stalls around 2000/3000. It has a lumpy cam, but will 'idle'... that is, stay running, at 600 rpm.
The big car 13" converter will stall lower, and the v6 converter will stall even higher.

A fuel altered replica perhaps? Man is that thing going to be a handful. Don't forget a really strong set of wheelie bars! How about some pics of the whole car?

This is one wicked engine

Thanks to everyone for their input!

I am not convinced that I need a higher stall converter, yet. *I do respect Jim Burek's input. *With a PAE 3000 converter, I think it would work great. *I do believe he gave me great advice. *If the car can go in and out of gear without a clunk, and it won't lurch forward, I may be happy with the stock converter. I think I will have enough torque to pull the car around. It never hurts to ask others for their opinions.
*
I will post pictures and details of the car/ blower/ engine build when the car is done. *I built this car from the ground up including chassis, blower manifold, valve covers, scoop, fuel tank, exhaust, and valley pan. *I still have alot of work to do. *I did post a few more pics for fun!
*
Thanks, *HTWOODS

SHWEEEET!!!

I gotta ask... Where did you come up with the blower parts, specificaly the manifold? Did you make it or did you buy it? New or used?

As far as your question, I dont think I have any input for you better than what you ahve already been told. I think (if it were me) for your application, I would have forgone the Switch Pitch. Seems like a bit of overkill for that light of a car, but otherwise would agree with Walt looking at the 300 size TQ or V6 stuff.

I'd love to see you to lay some smack down with JESUPERCAT in his FED!!!!

More Pics!!!!

Before you start spending $$$$.....ck out what the stock stall speeds are... I think that they will do just fine in a light car,,,,, buttttttt,,,,, What you have there is a torque monster,,,, it probably will balloon a stock converter,,,, you need to talk with some one like TCI or Bamp;M about this.... they make stronger converters.....It aint cool to grenade a converter leaving the line......I would not be as concerned about stall speeds as the safety factor......

HT, I sent you a PM.

Todd, what's the lobe spacing???? Not the L/C specs. The wider the lobe spacing the smoother the engine will run. Usually a pressure feed engine likes much wider lobe spacing of 114*-118*. This will idle smoothly with good low end vacuum.

P.S. Anybody notice the cutoff intake flanges???

Tom,

Hello!*

"Lobe Spacing" is 114. * I think it will work well. *Any input on the converter?

Best Regards,Todd

I talked with Jim Weise (TSP) today, after reading his posts. *He has some great advice. *He would modify a ST 300 12" Varaible Pitch Converter, if I can find a core. *For my application it would stall around 3000 RPM he thought, in high stall. *He could modify my 13" converter, but he felt stall would be too low for such a light car.

The reality of this combination, he pointed out, its that I have plenty of torque to pull the car around, and I really should only be concerned with getting the car into gear, without needing to put my foot through the floor to keep the car from lerching forward.

He pointed out to me that he has done around 160 converters, with no problems or comebacks. *This is good to know.

I honestly don't feel you will need much, if in actuality, any additional stall speed with that cam amp; the lobe spacing you have. In fact I would be willing to bet that if you are looking for that rumpity/rump idle  it won't be what you are expecting. Wouldn't it be just as easy to change the converter afterwards if it actually doesn't do what you what???  Just my thoughts Todd.

i just got a woody

Thanks to Buick Special, for helping me find a ST 300 Converter.  I will be sending it to CTI (Coinverter Technology Inc.)  888-374-4494.  Contact Darin.
When I called him he had just finished a V/P Converter for a Nailhead.  He is a really nice/ knowledgable guy.  Converters are his business!  He knows all about all of the V/P converters, and rattled off the GM Part Numbers even.  I got a warm and fuzzy feeling, he knows his stuff. A couple of my buddies use CTI exclusively, with great success.  Darin will tell you what he will do to the converter, including angles, upgrades, etc.

I'm sure Jim Weise at Tri-Shield Performance 763-422-8685,  would do a quality job, too!  For Sure!

I will follow up with a post after I get this running...

Todd
